Students-on-the-Land
The "Students-on-the-Land" forest stewardship educational trunk offers forestry tools and a curriculum to help students and teachers in the Northern Rockies learn through hands-on and classroom applications. Youth learn about forest ecosystems, plant and tree identification, compass navigation and other skills. They use forestry tools to survey forest conditions and stereoscopes to view aerial photographs and map forest types.

After School Club
Youth ages 8-12 are introduced to outdoor topics and activities such as land navigation, bird identification, forest science, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. At After School Club students are not just spectators they are participants. The After School Club meets at Swan Ecosystem Center one afternoon each week during the school year.
Learning by Observing
Youth learn hands-on about the ecosystem by helping monitor changes occurring in the valley's forests, lakes and streams. Children monitor streams, survey forest stewardship plots, and study the effectiveness of weevils at reducing knapweed infestations in an insectary they constructed.

School Field Trips and Youth and Family Programs
Local schools visit Swan Ecosystem Center on fall, winter and spring field trips. Field trips, hikes and activity stations can be customized to meet the specific topics, time frames and format expectations of individual teachers. Summer programs for youth or families include Fish Camp, fly fishing class, back packing class, and evening informational programs.

Swan Ecosystem Center's outdoor and classroom programs engage families, students, teachers, parents, retirees, foresters, and loggers in ecosystem study.

Learning together is fun and it helps us become better land stewards. SEC's programs for youth and adults incorporate natural resource specialists from around the Northwest as well as the expertise of local residents.
